Canon EOS 10D Review
|

With the EOS 10D Canon throws down the gauntlet for dSLRs that run
below $1999. It’s magnesium alloy body is the first things that you’ll
fall in love with, and it’s not just for looks as it protects the
camera’s advanced features, including a startling quick, wide-area
7-point autofocus system, 3fps shooting in 9-frame burst (in RAW + JPEG
or just JPEG) and a wide ISO range (100 to 3200), plus selectable color
space options (including Adobe RGB and sRGB).
The EOS 10D uses a proprietary large-area 6.4 megapixel CMOS sensor,
but has far superior image quality than you would expect because of the
peripheral circuitry upgrades and Canon’s sophisticated manufacturing
process.
The DIGIC image processor chip set gives the 10D high signal-to-noise
processing, enhances buffer performance and less battery consumption.
The 10D has a fantastically advanced 7-point AutoFocus system that
cover a wide area of the viewfinder and you can manually select them
for more precision control, even in trick, elusive low-light
situations. The35-zone metering system is impressive and provides
enhanced exposure consistency and stability.
There’s also an extension White Balance feature on the 10D, there is an
auto white, and six presets, as well as manual white balance from 2800
to 10,000 degree Kelvin (that you adjust in 100 degree increments).
Plus you have White Balance Bracketing, which shoots three images at
the same exposure while shifting the white balance up and down to
achieve the most pleasing color temperature for your images.
The EOS 10D employs an Intelligent Orientation Sensor to determine when
you’re holding the camera vertically or horizontally and it factors
that information in to improve the AF and exposure metering accuracy,
plus the IOS auto-rates any vertical image during playback review.
The LCD monitor has 5 brightness levels and a 10x zoom all within a
1.8-inch screen. You can use either Type I or Type II CF memory card
for over 2GB of storage, and you can save an image in RAW even when you
originally shot it in JPEG! Talk about having complete command over
your image!
But what really makes the 10D a stand-out camera is that it’s a dSLR
that has a direct printing feature. You just hook up a USB cable to the
camera and the 10D plugs right into any one of Canon’s compatible
bubble jet or CP printers – no need for a computer, as there are
dedicated print controls within the 10D’s menus that enable you to
select the print quantity, print size and even crop the image!
The EOS 10D comes an impressive bundled software package , such as
ZoomBrowers EX, PhotoRecord, RAW Image Converter, Photostitch and
RemoteCapture. Plus you get Photoshop Elements 2.0.
You can’t go wrong with 10D, its feature set is impressive and deep,
and gives you strong and versatile control over your images – directly
from the camera, and with a great precision on your PC. It’s hard to do
better than this camera for the price.
